Architecture began as the trio of Pratt (guitar, vocals), Sullivan (drums) and Pisney (keys, guitar) during the year 2000 in Chicago, Illinois. Initially an instrumental group, Architecture performed live around the city and beyond, and recorded a 3 song EP with Rax Tracks Producer Josh Shapera. The sound of the band quickly diversified, however, and from the textures and colors of this first offering sprung full-bodied songs.
Pratt took on the mantel of singer/songwriter, and the need for another musician arose. They were joined quickly by friend Matt Griffin (Early Day Miners, OlO, Unstable Ensemble) on bass. Several months into this union, Griffin returned to live in Bloomington, Indiana, but not before undertaking the task of recording and producing the band's first full-length record, which would continue in various locations over the next year. Faced with more live performances, Architecture gained a new accomplice: Don Mahlmeister (Collections of Colonies of Bees, The Candyland Riots). With Donny to fill the bass spot left by Griffin's relocation, the band resumed live performances in the Chicago area and elsewhere. Griffin joins the band as a fifth member when possible, adding extra guitar, keys, percussion & vocals.
Architecture's first recording, The Speed of Not Being Lost was released on Griffin's label, Flaccid Rock Records, November 11th, 2003. Architecture's music has been twice featured on WBEZ Chicago NPR's 848 program, and The Speed of Not Being Lost is receiving airplay after being serviced to 150 college and community radio stations in the US and Canada.
Architecture continue to perform live whenever possible, and are planning a tour of the Midwestern United States for March 2004. In their still relatively nubile existence they have already shared stages with Everyoned (feat. Chris Connelly, Brent Gutzeit, Tim Kinsella, Ben Vida & Liz Payne), Euphone, Bosco & Jorge, Mice Parade, Pele, Early Day Miners and Sue Roth (Lupine, Sarge) among others.
